Remote Monitoring

The most secure way to monitor PC use is to deploy a system that consists of a host, server, or appliance together with client-installed software. Unless you have a dedicated IT staff or the budget to bring someone in on a regular basis to check on things, a cloud-based service is probably the best choice.

What Is A Computer Network

In the broadest sense, a network is any interconnected group of people or things capable of sharing meaningful information with one another. In a technology context, network is usually short for “computer network” or “data network” and implies that computers are the things sharing the meaningful information. All data networks consist of nodes, which refers to any computer or digital device using the network and links, the physical connections (either wired or wireless) that carry messages between nodes.

Internet Hijackers: protect your company

Internet Hijackers: protect your company

Not everyone on the internet is trustworthy and community-focused. In fact, there are malicious people out there who wish to do your computer, and therefore you, harm. Computer/internet hijacking is devastating and can affect someone tremendously. It can also be devastating to the thousands of people your computer comes into interaction with, as their machine is also in danger of getting hijacked.

How Can You Tell if You’ve Been the Target of Hijackers?

Hijackers find security holes in your browsers, and they use this holes to implant malicious programs called malware on your computer. Some examples of this software can be relentless pop-up ads, site-redirects or an unexplained change to your home page. The hijacker has taken away your existing settings and; instead, have implanted their own on your computer. You may also notice a change in the speed of your computer if you’ve been hijacked. Your computer will run much slower than usual.

Some internet hijackers may also target your email and start sending out unwarranted emails to your contacts. You may even receive emails from people asking why you’ve sent them spam. You then know that your computer has been the target of an internet hijacker.

Trust the professionals to take care of the problem

When you’ve encountered an internet hijacker, the results of their actions can be difficult to get rid of on your own, especially if you know very little about computers. If you’ve been hijacked or just want to protect against hijacking, taking your computer to the professionals is your best bet. They will be able to install the right things on your computer to make sure all the evidence of a hijacker being there is gone and that you are protected from future attacks.

Computer Doc has the knowledge to fix the damage done and prevent attack from the most malicious of internet hijackers. One of the first things that we do is make sure that your operating system is up-to-date with the latest security updates. They will install the best anti-virus and anti-malware software on your computer to prevent hijackers from entering your system in the first place.

These are things that of course you can do by yourself, but it’s important that you do it correctly and that you use the best software for the least cost. That’s where a professional comes in. The people at Computer Doc will save you both time and money by updating and installing your computer to include the best in anti-hijacking protection.

They are called digital threats, threats that impose risks and may harm your device, anything digital, these threats may be a virus or malware, adware, configuration error, network problems, and more technical issues. Malwares have the ability to damage or disable computer systems, or your computer itself, malware is a software intended to disable and wreck your computer’s system when it got into your computer’s operating system. Computer viruses are also one of the ominous computer threats that harms your computer– A computer virus is a malware program, and when it’s executed through your computer, it replicates, inserting copies of its codes into other programs, data files, or the boot sector of your computer’s hard drive, and when the replication of the virus succeeds, the files, applications, or other things in your device will then become “infected” this may result to a corrupted files or missing files and malfunctioning device or hard drive. All of these could affect your computer’s operating condition. Adware can also be annoying, it is a software that displays or downloads advertising materials that are unwanted, that whenever you open a certain web browser, ads will just automatically interfere and close the website and pop the ads up right into your computer screen. Sometimes even if our antiviruses are activated, they’re not enough, there are malwares that are not being scanned by antiviruses, remain in the computer’s system and continuously damaging your computer.

Uninstalling Programs On Your PC

Having a large number of programs means having a very large registry too. A hard disk full of unwanted programs and a registry full of unwanted entries can slow down data access speed and as a result deteriorate the performance of your computer. This is the reason why, we recommend that you scan your computer on a regular basis for programs you no longer use and uninstall them.

Setting Up A Wireless Network

Because setting up a wireless network requires an understanding of the systems that will make up that network, using pc diagnostics on each system before you begin is smart. For example, do you know the specifications for each computer? While it’s not overly difficult to manually inventory each computer, computer diagnostic software can do it for you automatically with just a click of a button. Once an inventory has been generated for each computer, you can then print your inventories out and quickly see potential problems.

Regular Maintenance Saves You Money

Regular Maintenance Saves You Money

Regular computer maintenance is an excellent way to extend your computer’s life. You may enjoy good performance of your computer for the first couple of months, but the system could slow down and could wear out, which results in your computer frequently lagging, taking much time to boot, or worse, not functioning at all. Some people call a technician right away, but there are several small maintenance tasks you can do to bring your PC’s performance into shape without spending a penny.

Regular Maintenance Saves You Money

Scheduled maintenance could be difficult to some people, but this is one great way in keeping your PC in good shape and extend its life. There are free tools, applications, and utilities that you can download from your computer to help you solve some issues that put your computer at risk. Scanning your computer for malware is an example of good computer maintenance; this reduces the chance of lost file, corrupted file, and mostly, protect your pc from malware or viruses that cause havoc to your PC.

If your PC slows down, disk defragmentation can give you an immediate and noticeable improvement in system’s performance. There are tools you can use to clean up your disk without downloading any third party software. All unnecessary and unfamiliar programs will be removed, therefore increasing the system’s speed.

Also do a frequent clean up, to prevent dust from accumulating that can ruin your PC’s system and drives, to prolong the good performance of your pc and prevent your PC from malfunctioning, and so you don’t have to pay for a technician or buy a new computer.

Practice doing regular computer maintenance to save you money from buying parts when the driver is broken or destroyed from lack of maintenance, or from paying a technician to fix your computer, when sometimes all your computer needs is a cleanup.

If you’ve done all these things and your computer is still running slow, then it’s time to call Computer Doc to streamline your computer’s efficiency!

Wired vs. Wireless

When it comes to networking for the home or small business, you can either go wired or wireless. In the past, many have chose wired technology, but especially in home offices, wireless technology is on the rise.  If you are cost-conscious and care more about performance than mobility, than a wired Ethernet system would be your best bet. If you need mobility and cost is less of an issue, then perhaps wireless is your best bet.

Data Recovery Specialists

Data Recovery Specialists

Data recovery specialists are armed with the tasks of restoring lost information from a computer. They do various recovery techniques such as repairing hard drives or other storage devices to recover lost data.

  • Internal and external hard disks

  • Portable storage devices (flash, SD cards)

  • Enterprise storage (SAN, NAS, RAID)

They may also use special programs in order to identify and remove corrupt data.

Some data recovery specialists work for a large corporation while others may work for a smaller store. Some may work in a team, while others freelance individually.

Electronic devices store information in different ways. Desktops and laptops use hard drives, while tablets and smartphones use what are called solid-state storage devices, including flash memory. No matter what the device, it can become damaged in some way. A customer would then bring the device to a data recovery specialist to take a look at it.

Data recovery specialists may use several different methods in order to recover information from a corrupted or damaged drive. They may use “clean rooms” which is meant to prevent static charge or dust particles from tainting any of the exposed parts of the device as it’s being repaired. The data recovery specialist will carefully open the drive and examine the internal parts to determine what needs repairing.

Data recovery professionals may also use software to reconstruct missing information. They can determine which parts of the files are corrupted by patterns within the files. They can then predict what’s needed in order to reconstruct the files back to their original state.

A data recovery specialist must be methodical and very patient when dealing with delicate hardware like drives. However, they must also be very good with the public because they must deal with customers that bring in their devices.

Where Do You Find a Good Data Recovery Specialist?

In North Carolina, Computer Doc is the expert in data recovery. If you’ve lost any data as a result of a corrupted or damaged device, we can help! Bring it in and one of our expert data recovery specialists will do their best to ensure that you recover as much lost data as possible. Bring your device in today!

Wired vs. Wireless Routers

Wired vs. Wireless Routers

When it comes to networking for the home or small business, you can either go wired or wireless. In the past, many have chose wired technology, but especially in home offices, wireless technology is on the rise. There’s advantages and disadvantages to each type of technology, and we’ll go through them in this article so you can make an informed decision which is right for you.

About Wired Systems

Wired systems use Ethernet cables and network adapters. In order to accommodate more computers on the network, a hub or router is needed. Installation of wired networks can be difficult and time-consuming. Ethernet cables must be run from computer to computer, which can be difficult when the computers sit in different rooms. It used to be where you’d have to run cables along the ceiling, floor or wall; however, many new homes come with a CAT5 cable, which greatly simplifies the installation process. Once the hardware is installed, there’s not much difference between the installation of wired or wireless systems. Both rely on standard Internet Protocol and network operating system configuration options.

Wired systems are inexpensive, as Ethernet cable and hubs don’t cost a lot. If you were to get the option broadband router, it would cost a little more, but it would still be worth it for the ease of installation and security measures that comes with a broadband router, such as a firewall.

Ethernet cables and hubs are extremely reliable pieces of equipment and worth the investment. Over the last ten years, broadband modems have improved greatly in reliability as well.

Fast Ethernet costs a little more, but it provides 100 Mbps in bandwidth. Traditional Ethernet only provides 10 Mbps in bandwidth. Wired LANs with hubs can experience performance issues if many people are competing for the same bandwidth, so use switches instead.

About Wireless

Wireless systems can be installed either peer-to-peer (ad hoc mode) or with a central node (infrastructure mode). Ad hoc is okay for basic file sharing between computers, but if something such as a printer is needed, then infrastructure mode is necessary.

Wi-fi requires a wireless adapter and a central device called an access point.  Wireless gear can be considerably more costly than Ethernet equipment, though wireless technology continues to decrease in price.

Wireless LANs suffer a few more reliability issues than wired networks, as they may receive interference from common household items such as the microwave. However, the reliability issues usually aren’t large enough to make a big concern.

Now that you know a little about each system, which is right for you? If you are cost-conscious and care more about performance than mobility, than a wired Ethernet system would be your best bet. If you need mobility and cost is less of an issue, then perhaps wireless is your best bet.

Having problems deciding which type of LAN system is best for you? Contact Computer Doc for our expert advice now!

Why does my computer run slow?

Why does my computer run slow?

You’ve been in this position several times before…the screen freezes and something times out while your computer processes something. Oftentimes it may take you more time than normal to finish a project because your computer just won’t cooperate. Sometimes you think you can even run faster than your computer operates. There’s many reasons why your computer can run slow. However, the good news is most of these reasons why your computer runs slow can be fixed. Before you throw your computer out the window, read on to find out why it’s running slow and what you can do about it.

Reasons why computers run slow

You’re Low on RAM

Your computer may run slow because there’s simply not enough space for the computer to run anything.  There’s many programs, such as modern web browsers, that are memory-suckers and will run more slowly when there’s less RAM available.

What to do about it: Make sure that you quit any memory-sucking programs that you aren’t currently using like a web browser.

You Have Bad RAM

Low RAM isn’t the only reason why your computer may run slow. If you have bad RAM, your computer could be spending a lot of time looking for it, which slows the computer down. The bad RAM can be discovered by boot up testing, write errors and read errors.  Testing and write errors force Windows to use more RAM so it can keep track of these errors. Read errors slow everything down because the computer must recover from crashes.

What to do about it: The only way to fix bad RAM is to replace it. Use a diagnostic tool such as Memtest86 to determine if there’s any bad RAM.

Your Files are Fragmented

When you create or save a new file, Windows write the new file at the end of the old file. Every time you increase the size of a old file, it causes a split in the file called a fragmentation. Fragmented files take longer to load because they are split into many pieces and Windows has to join them together. This makes the computer run slow.

What to do about it: To prevent the computer from running slowly, run a defragmentation tool at least once a month.

Your Disk Drive is Failing

Most often disk drive failure results from worn ball bearings. These wear down over time – it doesn’t happen overnight. A professional can use diagnostic tools to determine the health of the disk drive.

These are the main reasons why computers run slow. If you’ve checked all these things and your computer is still running slow, bring it into Computer Doc for a full work-up.

Did You Know? Facts about the History of Computers

Did You Know?  Facts about the History of Computers

Many of us consider ourselves to be “experts” on the computer if we can use Microsoft Office and can figure out how to work the printer. However, the history of computers has paved the way for many of the modern technological luxuries that we enjoy today. Here’s some highlights from the illustrious history of computers.

The History of Computers

– In 2400 BC, the abacus, the first known calculator, was built in Babylonia. The abacus paved the way for an entirely new generation of counting machines.

– In 300 BC Pingala invented the binary number, which we wouldn’t have computers without, since the computer speaks in binary code….1’s and 0’s.

– Leonardo Da Vinci was a mechanical pioneer.  He developed the first mechanical calculator, which brought about the age of automation. Da Vinci’s work in robotics also made him a man well before his time and one of the fathers of the modern microcomputer.

– Charles Babbage designed the first mechanical computer in 1822.  He then went on a decade later to invent the Analytical Engine. His inventions made him the founder of the modern computer.

– A machine called the Comptometer, developed in 1884, was operated by pressing keys. This computational device was the foundation of the modern keyboard.

– In 1896 Herman Hollerith founded the Tabulating Machine Company, which later went on to become IBM in 1911. IBM would set the standard for the modern Personal Computer.

– In 1937, Alan Turing developed the concept of the theoretical computing machine.

– In 1939, George Stibitz develops the Complex Number Calculator – a foundation for digital computers.  In this same year, William Hewlett and David Packard start Hewlett Packard. Of course, Hewlett Packard would go on to become one of the largest computer companies in the world.

– During WWII, Adolf Hitler used the computer’s predecessor to encrypt messages. These code machines were also used by the United States to decrypt similar messages.

– The term computer “bug” was first used in 1945 by Grace Hopper.

– The first electronic computer is created in Japan by Hideo Yamachito in 1950.

– The first business computer was developed in 1951.

– The computer is made of many silicon chips, which were invented in 1958 by Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce

– The computer mouse was developed in 1963. It got its name from the “tail” at the end.

– E-mail was invented by  Ray Tomlinson in 1971. Can you believe that email is actually that old?!

– By 1983, more than 10 million computers were in use in the United States.

– In 1991, the World Wide Web was launched to the public.

Now that you know a general history of computers from the experts at Computer Doc, go and impress your friends with all of your new knowledge!

How Computer Viruses Work

How Computer Viruses Work

A computer virus is something that none of us want to deal with. It gets inside our computers and does discrete things that we certainly don’t want it to. Sometimes our antivirus (if we have one) will stop the computer virus, often it does not. The anti-virus software may not have been updated to protect the computer from a newer computer virus. It’s important to learn how a computer virus works so that we can protect ourselves and our beloved data.

A computer virus is a malware program that gets inside of your computer through something you may have clicked on or downloaded and replicates itself in program and data files or somewhere into the hard drive. The computer is then said to be infected. The virus can steal private information, corrupt data, or instruct the computer to do self-harmful tasks.

How can computer viruses get in?

Software bugs

If a software has a bug, a hacker might use a virus to exploit that bug in order to infect the computer and spread the virus. It’s always important that you install any updates to files (updates that have been previous checked by an anti-virus software).

.Exe files

Computer viruses will also be attached to .exe files. When the user attempts to launch the infected program, the virus is released and begins its reign of terror on the computer.

Classes of computer viruses

One of the ways to classify computer viruses is where they reside: in binary executables (such as .EXE or .COM files), data files (such as Microsoft Word documents or PDF files), or in the boot sector of the host’s hard drive (or some combination of all of these).

Resident Computer Viruses

These computer viruses install themselves as part of the operating system. When the operating system attempts to retrieve something, the virus attacks and replicates.

Macro Computer Viruses

A macro virus is a computer virus that is embedded as a macro in a document , often in a email. So when the person opens it, the virus code executes and infects the computer.

Boot sector Computer Viruses

As its name mention, this virus targets the boot sector of the hard drive or removable storage.

Anti-virus

Software can intercept these programs before they are installed. They typically run a scan and notify you if there’s a problem with any portion of your hard drive or any of your files. You want to make sure you’re updating this software all the time to the latest edition.

Does your computer have a virus and you don’t know where it is, what it’s doing and how to get rid of it and you live in the Charlotte area? Contact the experts at Computer Doc to restore your computer to its pre-virus state.

Finding A Good Computer Repair Shop

Give the shop a thorough written description of the problem and try to speak directly to the technician — Get a written estimate of repairs — Consider whether repairs are really worth making – or whether it is time to move on to a new model — Before paying, get a detailed invoice, including a description of the components repaired, the date, a breakdown for labor, the price for each part, and the warranty — Test equipment as soon as you get it home and return it to the shop or notify the shop in writing right away if it is still not working right.

Learn What You Need To Know About Laptops Here

Do you want to get a new laptop? Are you aware of what you need to look for? If you aren’t, read on for some excellent advice and tips. There are a lot of choices out there, so many in fact that it can confuse you. Use the helpful advice below to make sense of the experience so you can find a great laptop.

If you would love a new tablet and laptop, why not buy a combination of the two? These laptops give you a two-in-one tablet and laptop; you’ll pay less for a convertible laptop than if you buy the two separately.

Don’t bother buying preinstalled software. When you opt for this, you never get a good price. Rather, get the software on the Internet at a discount. You can save from 20 to 30 percent most of the time, but sometimes you can save more than that.

Check for the ability to upgrade RAM and the hard drive for the laptop you plan to buy. You may not need any extra space or memory now, but you might later on. Upgrading can be far more cost effective than replacing your entire computer. Think about this before you buy a laptop.

If you’re going to be lugging a laptop all over town, carry it correctly. Get a firm sturdy bag so that it is not swinging and banging against you while you walk. Over time this consistent banging may damage the components of your laptop.

If the laptop of your dreams happens to be out of your practical price-range by a few hundred dollars, think about getting a refurbished model. The cost can be quite low, and if the warranty is good, you will have minimal risk. Many don’t cause their owners issues, so many great models are within reach.

Graphics Chip

The graphics chip is a crucial component of your computer. A graphics card that is integrated is good for basic use. If you really enjoy watching videos, movies and gaming, you want a dedicated graphics chip for better performance. There are laptops with graphics cards that are specially geared towards those who are avid gamers and movie lovers.

Consider customizing your laptop. A one size fits all approach may seem the easiest option to take. The problem is whether or not your needs will change, or if the price is right. When you opt for customized, you will pay less as you are not paying for unnecessary hardware.

There are many things about buying a laptop that are important to know. This article can help you learn more about them. Use this information the next time you are choosing a laptop.

In Relation To Laptops, We Supply The Best Tips

Lots of people are searching for the perfect laptop. It should meet all of their needs and be presented at a good price. The more information you have about purchasing a laptop, the better off you’ll be. Keep reading for what you need to know.

If you are considering purchasing a new laptop and a tablet, you might want to consider a convertible laptop instead. You may save money by buying a convertible laptop instead of two separate devices. However, you will still be able to use it as a tablet and as a laptop.

Just because a laptop costs more, doesn’t mean it is better. This is certainly not always true. There are indeed times when the higher cost is due to nothing more than the brand name on the machine. Buy laptops for their specs.

Think about what you want a laptop for before you buy one. That will determine how much to spend. Simple email checking and Internet browsing doesn’t need half the machine that gaming or professional applications require. When you consider what you do, this can help you find the machine that is better priced.

Prior to spending any money, give a prospective laptop a try. Most people don’t give a lot of thought to ergonomics when shopping for a new laptop, looking more at things like memory and battery life. But, comfort and usability are critical considerations too.

Many times you need to spend more on a laptop than you originally planned. Technology is always changing, and a no-frills laptop will be woefully behind sooner than you think. Simply upping the specs a bit can mean the difference of years before you find the need to replace the laptop.

When you create your budget for buying a laptop, be sure to think about the accessories you may need. You may want a mouse or a case. Do an online search to get a price-range, and budget for each item accordingly.

Netbooks sometimes may seem confusing, but they’re not. Although a lot of people think that netbooks are smaller laptops, they are mistaken. Netbooks provide limited options, and are often only used for Internet and email. They do not have the many capabilities of a full laptop. Don’t get a netbook when you really need a laptop.

It’s important to do your research when buying an expensive item like a laptop computer. The above article is a good place to start, and you can use the tips to buy the right laptop for your budget. Be sure to use what you have learned to make the process a simple one.

Laptop Tips You Need Before You Go To Buy

Do you need a new laptop? Would you like to know how to save money? Should the process of shopping be simpler? If you agreed with those, the information below can help you.

Check out the home shopping channels to get good laptop deals. Such sites let you make monthly payments and do not require credit checks. For around $100 monthly you can get your ideal laptop.

Before purchasing a laptop, consider how you will use it. That will help determine how much money you’ll need to spend. If you don’t use the computer for business purposes, then perhaps all you will need is something that is good for surfing the Internet. Knowing the features you need and those you don’t need will help you find a laptop that fits your budget.

Be sure your laptop has a satisfying sound system. Some laptops are a little skimpy on sound, because it does not comprise a full computer system on its own. Thus, you will find that sound playback for videos and movies is very poor. Be sure to take a look at the sound system prior to buying a computer.

Be flexible in your budget when seeking the perfect laptop. You may need to spend slightly more than anticipated. A bargain-basement laptop will be quickly outpaced by the increasing hardware demands of new software and media applications. Upgrading one step up can mean that you get a laptop that last for several years, rather than only one year.

Think about whether you want to have a Windows or Mac laptop for your next laptop purchase. Windows based laptops are generally cheaper than Macs; however, the interface on a Mac is preferable to some people. Take some time to check out both thoroughly when doing your shopping. Then, hit the Internet and look for reviews and feedback on each.

Create a list of what you will be using your laptop for. Think of your everyday use, such as reading recipes while cooking. If so, you better have a waterproof skin on it! Use the list you make to find the best laptop for you.

Are you ready to go purchase your new laptop? Do you see how you can get a great bargain without sacrificing quality? Do you know feel competent when it comes to purchasing a laptop? You should now feel this way, so get out there and get your laptop!

Laptop Tips You Need Before You Go To Buy

Stupendous Hints About Laptops The Experts Will Explain

Many people are scared when it comes to buying a laptop. However, if you take some time to research the topic, you’re going to be able to get a good machine for a good deal. This article will help you do that.

If you plan to watch any HD movies or engage in lots of gaming, it is better to get a laptop that has dedicated graphics chips. You may find that integrated graphics are insufficient to support some video games. Determine upfront whether you are going to need the dual-core processor or a quad-core chip instead.

To save money, buy a laptop that does not have word processing software already installed. Most of the time it’s better to pay the full retail price for this kind of software. Instead, buy the software off of a discount vendor online. You will end up saving a large percentage.

Make a precise list of all of the uses for your laptop. For instance, do you want to use it to read recipes while in the kitchen? If so, it will need a waterproof skin. Make sure you see what features you need, based on your list.

If you’re purchasing a laptop solely for entertainment, check out tablets. A tablet will let you download apps. Most tablets can connect wirelessly to a keyboard, so you can use them to compose emails, write recipes or even take notes.

Laptop LCD displays can eat up quite a bit of battery time. To boost battery life, turn down the screen’s brightness to the very lowest setting that allows you to see. Just dimming your display will really help you conserve battery strength.

Always think like a smart shopper when purchasing a laptop. Look at retail stores and find the best deal for laptops. Use them to decide which one you want. There’s nothing stopping you from heading home and buying the same model online in order to maximize your savings.

When trying to decide which laptop to buy, let your primary use for it be the biggest influence. Some computers are built for gaming, while others are more appropriate for work. Figure out what you need yours for, and comparison shop brands that offer what you need.

When you go to buy your laptop, you might feel overwhelmed. The information above will help you find out when you need. We hope that you now feel completely confident as you begin to shop.
